I hope that my visitors had a pleasant and safe New Year’s Eve. I was unfortunately laid up in bed with a cold and didn’t do anything fun or exciting other than watch The Fugitive. However, all I could think about were my gardening ambitions in 2025!
First off, I moved my hydroponic setup to a much smaller container (see photo below, Lone Star can for scale). This one is a little over 2 liters, as opposed to the 5 gallons of my old one. There are several advantages to this smaller container, namely, the water does not need to be changed out as often, the pump can run quieter and still aerate the water (this is nice when I’m trying to sleep), and there is now more room in the grow tent for other items. Admittedly, I’m not having much luck so far with the hydrponics, the only thing still alive is the parsley, and even that isn’t doing too well. If I’m unsuccessful with that, I’ll probably drain the reservoir and add a thermometer that I can hook up to an Arduino or Raspberry pi before attempting to plant something else in it.
For Christmas, I got a Bonsai kit from my brother. Although it will require a lot of patience, I’m very excited about this. My understanding is that bonsai trees usually take about 3 years to look presentable if you’re growing from seed. Since Bonsai trees are incredibly particular, I’m going to have a whole plan set out before I begin this. The kit I have contains 4 varieties of tree. The instructions pretty much just consist of this chart below:
Tree | Brazilian Rosewood | Black Spruce | Colorado Blue Spruce | Flame Tree |
---|---|---|---|---|
Seeds | Soak 24 hours between dampened paper towels | Soak 24 hours between dampened paper towels | Soak 24 hours between dampened paper towels | Soak 48 hours in hot water and snip one end of casing |
Soil Temperature (must be kept consistent) | 85F - heating mat required | 65F | 65F | 70F |
Soil Depth | 1/8" | 1/8" | 1/8" | 1/8" |
Light | 10 hours of bright light daily | 10 hours of bright light daily | 10 hours of bright light daily | 10 hours of bright light daily |
Germination Time | 14 days | 14 days | 10-14 days | Anywhere between 10-30 days |
Stay tuned, there will be more updates here in the next few days.
